Drawing and painting on location is what I love to do. Most of my pictures are made completely on site sitting with a stool and drawing board trying to capture what is directly in front of me. I like to make decisions about what to add and edit on the go.
For illustrations, often I like to make sketchbook drawings from life - using this as reference material later.
I am particularly inspired by London. The energy and changing nature of the city are both things that I find really interesting. Street furniture, passing vehicles and people often feel like a necessary part of making a scene feel true to life.
Watercolours are a great medium for using outdoors - you can paint bright and translucent colours quickly, but also take time for describing details. The variation of line you can get with a dip pen and ink is something I have always found really appealing.
